Pre-Apprenticeship
This program is a great opportunity for those who enjoy working outdoors and are not afraid to get their hands dirty. The Pre-Apprenticeship course exposes trainees to the physical demands and expectations of the construction industry. Through lectures, demonstrations and lots of hands-on activities, you will experience what it takes to succeed in this challenging work environment.
In partnership with the Northern California Laborers Union, this course prepares you for their apprenticeship program.
Prerequisites
Prior to enrolling students must complete Intake and Assessment process. In order to benefit from the Pre-Apprenticeship course, students must possess a minimum fifth-grade skill level in reading comprehension and Mathematics. Students must also be 18 years of age.
Course Topics
Intro to the construction environment, construction math, safety, hand/power tools, and team building.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of the Pre-Apprenticeship course students will be able to:
- Follow workplace safety standards and proper use of equipment
- Identify and properly use tools and equipment commonly used by laborers
- Understand the work environment, as well as what to expect on a job site
- Carry out key math functions (e.g. reading tape measures, calculating volume, etc.)
- Understand the role and history and of organized labor, collective bargaining and the state and federal laws pertaining to apprentices
